Carmen Toth is known for releasing some pretty addictive material, and with a lot of the releases she puts out, she's speaking her mind in a bit of an unfiltered way.
Her latest release and full-length album, Fix the World, is the Canadian singer and songwriter's most in-your-face and raw but catchy record to date.
The album goes into a lot of personal attributes, and she delivers it in a way that's completely understandable but still in her own personal approach, especially lyrically.
"L-Bomb" is a song that dives into love and all the emotional aspects that come along with it. The fear that that person may not feel the same way, the excitement of having the feeling in general, and the wonder if regret will end up happening in the end.
In this one song Alone, she goes through all this emotional run through. It's a gamut of thought and feeling packed into a 3-minute and 25-second track. This is a perfect example of how she's able to put so much thought into the lyrics of her songs. She wants you to really understand where she's coming from and how she feels about the situation while you're listening.
The thought process that goes behind putting together lyrics like this is incredible. Meanwhile, the song itself has a pop and rock approach that calls back to hard rock and really has a way of taking something classic and refreshing it.
The progression and melodies of the song do have some of that sort of tense energy, just as the lyrics do. The song is about being nervous because of falling in love again, which was unexpected.
So it's pretty cool how she's able to write and create the music so that it follows suit with the lyrics in terms of the emotion behind everything. That nervous energy is there in the actual progressions and notes.
Then we have songs that feel more like classic rock in a way. Songs like "My Ears Are Still Ringing", which I took as more of a political song. Not standing on certain sides of the political world in particular, but more being in the middle and just watching everything unfold.
This song is something all of us can understand quite well, simply because it's more about having to deal with just the state of the world as it is now.
Everything feels unhinged, and she captures that really well in this track.
She does have a brightness to the guitar work here. A lot of her wrists have a brightness to them and combine some elements of punk and pop rock, classic rock, and hard rock. She's able to put all of those together on one record very well, and while she's doing so, she expresses her thoughts and feelings on all of these different personal and not-so-personal situations.
So either way, you're getting truths from her. This is like reading a diary.
You feel connected to a lot of the songs and to the record in full, especially if you listen to the entire thing. It is certainly worth listening to the full album and taking in all of its sort of light rock and alternative pop aspects and tones.
Everything from the guitars to the live drums, the vivacious energy on certain tracks, and the attitude on others, all give you a sense of Carmen, and it works out amazingly.
I miss this record because a lot is going on. When you're done, you might just find yourself a fan of Carmen.
