A full album release from Tara Beier brings out quite a refreshing soundscape that blends indie and dream pop, hints of Americana, jazz, psychedelic rock, and southern undertone, along with a beautifully honest approach that lets you grab hold of the sentiment behind certain tracks and ride them out.
The Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree album comes right in with a bright and colorful soul and pop-rock single that displays loads of vibrancy and personality, along with a little edginess at the same time.
What's cool about this track in particular is that it displays some of what you can expect on the rest of the record in terms of soundscape.
It is a little bit ambient or fast in its undertone, but really has this pop-coated approach that is vivacious and addictive. This also comes from those soulful vocals and lively and electric energy.
As the record unfolds, you get hints of classic rock elements along with the rest, a little bit of funk, and just that soul-pop approach that seems to be a common theme tonally throughout this record.
Now, there are plenty of surprises around the corners, and you can hear very classic influences that affect the aesthetic of the record.
The whole thing has a bit of twang in terms of the guitar sound, and is dripping with the reverb effect in various places, so there is this very warm and almost vintage tone to a lot of these tracks.
"Lost In Death Valley" is a perfect example of what I mean. However, a lot of the songwriting also leans towards some vintage approaches. The songs feel like they were written in the '70s at times, and I love the combination of old and new styles coming together to build something you just end up falling right into.
This was a gracefully performed record. Are amazing. They are soulful, passionate, and a bit theatrical at times. They also boast that classic or vintage approach, and showcase plenty of character and color throughout the record's course, but the way the music is performed sets the moods and drives that aesthetic even further.
I personally love songs like "Shooting Star" as they give you a bit of that warmth and personality, but also a little garage edginess at the same time. It's lightly fuzz-toned in the guitar sound, and the drumming throughout songs like this gives you that live performance element or vibe.
This was a great blend of genres and styles, but it does have this theme, and that's part of why the whole record should be heard at once.
There are those staple feels, tones, and sounds throughout it, but again, there are some surprises and definitely beautiful approaches in terms of the songwriting, arrangements, compositions, and just the overall tone of this record.
At times, it does feel like this is a concept album. The songs have unique ways of interconnecting with each other, it seems.
To me, that matters a little bit less than the fact that listening to the whole album takes you on a journey.
This album feels like an experience, and it was fun to swim through that and listen to all these lush tones and soundscapes coming at me.
You can tell that there was a lot of attention paid to the tone of everything throughout this record. The vocals have just the right reverb on different tracks, and the guitars have an outstanding tone that fluctuates and changes from track to track, depending on what the aesthetic is.
So, there was a lot of thought behind the entire soundscape and experience of this record, and that's why it flows so well.
The whole thing actually ended up feeling kind of dreamy for me. When it was over, I had to snap myself out of it.
I definitely dig records like that because it does give you that escape or experience, and that's an attribute that I've missed in terms of albums being released.
This was honest, fun, definitely charismatic, and packed a little bit of a punch while keeping you floating alongside everything.
This is a record you can swim through, and Tara really gives you plenty to do that with.
A very textually and tonally addictive and unique record, jump into Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree.
