Quaint Delusions

Quaint Delusions’ cover of Guided by Voices’ “Postal Blowfish” manages to tap into the essence of lo-fi indie rock, while bringing its own spirited twist. As someone who first encountered GBV in the '90s, when their unpolished, visceral energy was a revelation, this cover piqued my curiosity from the start. And they deliver — not just faithfully, but with a certain raw enthusiasm that feels both nostalgic and urgent.

The track opens with syncopated guitar riffs, backed by a tight rhythm section that drives a relentless pulse. There’s nothing overly complex about the arrangement, but its straightforwardness is where the charm lies. What could have been a by-the-numbers cover instead becomes a headrush of momentum, driven by a vocal delivery that feels on edge, as if the song is holding something back just long enough before exploding.

What makes this version work so well is its ability to elevate its simplicity — turning it into something more electrifying. It’s a jolt of energy that hits like a shot of espresso, a fitting tribute to a band that always thrived in the margins of the indie world. For anyone who lived through the DIY ethos of the '90s, this cover serves as a knowing nod to Guided by Voices’ cult status.
