Drey Returns with a Beautiful New Single

Writer: R.A.G.R.A.G.

If you are not yet quite too familiar with the musical stylings of Drey, then let us be among the first to introduce you as she has recently released a new single that lets her presence come through so strongly that you can feel how the song oozes personality from the very start of it.

"Holding On To You" is gorgeous. This is a song that she's able to give so much with because she lets a lot out lyrically and doesn't really hold back or build big walls around herself when she does this.

You can hear a lot of those inner thoughts just spilling out everywhere and not only does that take some guts, but it's done with such a graceful approach while still keeping slightly youthful and dreamy that you connect with it automatically.

I adore an artist that's able to put so much out there in one little song. She lets you paint images in your head and she paints those thoughts so clearly with her words that you completely relate to them.

Having that strong of a connection so quickly in a track is kind of unique and it's basically because of how she just lets all of that out and one shot and was so much description.

I feel like this is such a strong point to her music in general as we're not really strangers to the artist, and she usually does release music with a lot of passion, guts, and emotional backbone.

The production of the song is outstanding simply because it's got a great build. It feels and is super personal and at the start of the song you have a more stripped-down approach so you can focus on those vocals and those lyrics.

As the song builds and gets bigger, the production starts to widen, and more instruments are coming into place.

The song intensifies more and more and the atmosphere is built up.

By the last 30 seconds of the track, you have this climactic overflow of color, texture, and tone.

One of the things I love about this artist in particular is how she uses her vocals almost like an instrument.

Well, by the last section of the song you can hear that clearly. She's got floating vocals just flowing through the soundscapes of this track during that final chorus and it makes everything so sonically blissful in a way that it does indeed feel very dreamy.

It takes a certain kind of mind to be able to connect the theme or premise of a track both musically and lyrically.

This track, to an extent, feels almost like a fleeting thought and it's a bit fantastical in a way.

There's a point in the earlier part of the song where she talks about how this significant other could be her man and she could be his wife and that's put out in a fantasy kind of way. Like she's imagining it. Or like she's imagining saying it to him really.

By the last chorus, it feels more like she is saying it.

So, it's almost as if that build-up is her building up the courage to actually say that out loud.

I could be getting this wrong of course. I didn't write the song. But this is what I'm picking up from it. Just taking something to a level of fruition. Not being afraid to say the things that you want to say to that person.

It's so important that we understand the relevance of that and how Drey expresses it is incredible.

I love how intense it feels by the end of the song. How many layers there are just traveling through each other.

Just gorgeous.

I have suggested this before but I'll say it again; listen to this song with headphones.

Her music gives you a lot to drink in, and listening to it with headphones lets you pick up on all those layers and those textures super well.

Definitely check this song out of course and while you're at it, listen to more of her stuff because if you like this song, then you're going to love a slew of her other releases which there are a good amount of.
