A new release from DuncanC delivers a bit of a soiree of uniquely built and aesthetically pleasing singer-songwriter and folk undertone singles that have a little bit of an edginess to them at times but are all soft tracks that come from the heart and while listening to them you begin to get a great feel for the personality that they came from.
My Valentine (Remastered)Â is an EP that spans three tracks with each one delivering its own unique approach to sending a message, coming from the heart, and blending influences in terms of soundscape and aesthetic.
The first and title track is a great introduction to the EP. it gives you some of the staple feels you're going to hear throughout the rest of the release.
You have a beautiful sound that feels very personal and one-on-one while creating an almost cinematic backbone, and throughout it all, you're paying attention to that sentiment that the song delivers.
This, of course, is the point. These songs are love songs to an extent, and although each one has its own approach, they all go together like pieces of a puzzle.
With the first track, you do get these elements of garage rock influence and indie rock approach in its underbelly. It is more of a singer-songwriter or even folk-driven song, but it's not just that.
It's got different instrumentation and effects on the vocals that all give things that slightly edgier feel that just makes it all a little outside the box.
This is important because I wouldn't want you to think this is just a straight acoustic guitar and vocal style record.
It has that honesty to it, though. The lyrics are very straightforward, and the way that some of these songs come through colorfully and with some vibrancy, in combination with those lyrics, is partially what makes the record so cinematic.
It's not over the top but it's still emotionally driven, and these songs can be very warm and have a unique way of wrapping themselves around you and keeping you right where they want to.
The second track on the record is called "Sweet T", and this one really has a more driving rock feel, although it is acoustic and vocal. The guitars are really being slammed, the vocals are belting out loud, and the whole vintage aesthetic almost feels like a classic rock single.
This track in particular has a major energy level and is completely infectious right from the start.
Again, you have this vintage sort of aesthetic to it that feels good when you listen to it and that fists in the air sing along kind of vibe.
Outstanding vocal performance on this song in particular, simply because he's really letting loose, and it works perfectly for the track.
Although it is an instrumental, my favorite track on the record is the final one called "Playing from the Heart".
This is also a track that portrays more of a rock guitar feel and that classic rock aesthetic, which I enjoyed. The tone of this one is perfection and really showcases how he can write songs with fewer boundaries than what you may be used to, which is completely refreshing and makes for great songwriting.
These are songs that you can really connect with in different ways.
This was a very well-woven EP, and I loved how it came together and the sentiments that it gave off, along with the heart that it has in general.
It's been quite some time since I've heard a release with this perfect balance of heart, character, charisma, energy, and that hint of lo-fi tonality that just makes things feel warmer and more personal in a sense.
Really, an outstanding record that you should certainly listen to right now and see how it affects you.
