A new release from a project called Percussia is a beautifully inviting and warming one that has a transformative cinematic underbelly and the whole record is comprised of harp, xylophone, and a bit of percussion with pieces from three different performers and the whole record spans 14 tracks and takes you through these sorts of chapters.
Throughout the Plucked & Struck record you have this explorative classical set of musical pieces that are composed with such a unique approach and a brightness that comes and goes along with an almost dreamy tonality of course due to the harp and I absolutely adore the directions that this record takes you because it's incredibly freeing in a certain aspect as it lets your mind go along with the music in a free flow.
Where your mind takes you is up to you, but the music plays a big hand in directing and steering to these places which is incredibly enticing and in a weird way it's rejuvenating.
The performers include Ingrid Gordon on what's called the Orff xylophone which is a miniature didactic instrument developed by German composer Carl Orff in the twenties.
Ingrid also plays a bit of percussion on the record.
Susan Jolles plays the Celtic harp and does amazing job at this as the heart plays a heavy hand in these musical pieces and is the instrument in my opinion, that carries some of these pieces to a bright and atmospheric place.
There are also some beautifully performed operatic vocals by Melissa Fogarty on a few tracks.
A lot of these were composed by a handful of different people but they all have such a way of connecting together and I feel like this is a record that you shouldn't be listening to from beginning to end in order to soak it all in the way it was meant to be.
These songs will take you to all kinds of different places and such a rich background behind it all.
As it says in the liner notes of the record; The music on this album is deeply rooted in New York City. All three performers—and most of the composers—are from “the world’s borough” of Queens. You might say this album demonstrates our solution to the problem of transporting large and bulky instruments on the subway to gigs. It’s all a matter of scale.
So, you can tell there is a connective aspect between the performers, the pieces of music, and everything else about this release.
This is the kind of thing that you listen to when you go home, kick your feet up on the couch, and begin to relax after your long day.
It has a way of putting you in a state of trance and for me, it was calming and even enlightening at certain points.
There wasn't even a second I did not enjoy about this release and everything was performed with heart, and a real love and passion for the instruments played.
Kick back, play this record, and just soak it in because it feels great.
