A brilliant EP release from Touch the Buffalo touches on the band's strong points by giving songs that each have their own atmosphere and direction but also showcase how the band can story tell and with each track you get a little bit of a different side to how they do their thing including how they bend genres.
To me, the Bohdicitta EP is indeed a genre-bender because although it is all in a rock embodiment, it gives off elements of indie rock, post-punk, pop, singer-songwriter, and more all rolled up into one EP so when you listen to the record in full you get this heavy-handed atmosphere that lets each song tell those stories, and you can soak those in, in different ways.
The record starts with its first track called "This City's Burning" and this one is a great introductory to the EP itself because that brings you into this sort of edgy but still vast post-punk approach and has a lot to the guitar tones throughout the track and how it unfolds arrangement wise as well.
This track in particular, really gives off amazing guitar work, and although it has that rock backbone again, there is a vaster and more expansive sort of atmosphere in the underbelly of it, so you start to get engulfed by the soundscape beginning with this track.
I'm there, the record continues to evolve and change with songs that are emotionally driven, ballad-esque, theatrical, personal, and still tell those stories from different points of view so that you really get pulled into the lyrical aspect of it all as well.
It was very surprising how this was an EP that showcased so many different and diverse approaches to the band's songwriting because although again, it does have a rock backing a lot of the time, it Ventures off into these other styles and everything seems compliment at the same time somehow.
This is an EP that you need to listen to from beginning to end because if you don't listen to the whole thing, you're not going to get the whole spectrum of what the record has to offer.
Listening to one or two songs won't even give you an idea of the rest of them because they can be so different from each other.
The other reason is that, at times, this release feels almost like a concept record with songs that interconnect in different ways.
The guitar tones change with the song approach, and the vocal approach always has this sort of personal feel to it. There is soul and a lot of heart in terms of how the vocals are performed so you know a lot of this comes from a real place or some kind of inner thoughts. It all feels authentic is what I mean.
I do adore how those vocals come through so passionately but still have this kind of indie almost pop coating to them.
The same could be said for the entire band as a matter of fact.
These guys write songs that are catchy and memorable but still have layers in depth to them not just because they tell stories, but because of how they're put together, built come and performed.
This EP did an amazing job of sort of showcasing how these guys put a lot into what they're doing and how they release music with fewer boundaries than you may be used to.
I love a record where no two songs sound the same because then you get a record that isn't cookie cutter whatsoever.
These guys give off a perfect dynamic balance and energy throughout this EP and really I have a way of letting you get engulfed by what they're doing and in the end sort of washed away by it all as well.
You end up thinking about this record after it's over.
It's kind of like a bit of an escape in a way. Certain elements of it stick with you and you want to go back to those by listening to the songs again.
I love this release and how much heart it actually gave off.
Listen to this whole record because it's most certainly worth it.
