A new release from Wizardom delivers a driving and colorful but still edgy and vast single with a soundscape that wraps itself around you while bringing together elements of new and vintage pop all at the same time.
One of my favorite aspects about "Unique Soul" is how it indeed does take elements of '80s and early '90s pop influence and brings an almost New Wave element into play. This comes heavily from the vocals for the most part. The vocal approach has this kind of deep and robust approach and feeds into classic aesthetics, beckoning bands like Tears for Fears or INXS.
All of this is blended into a more driving combination of dance, house, and electronic music that breeds that expansive undertone with synth pads that float through the song's ether, creating a massive atmosphere for you to float alongside with.
Even though that vastness is there the entire time, the beats are driving and have a bit of a heavy-handedness to them, along with some experimental approaches that helped the song come through with a bit of a wild approach, and it feels almost fantastical in a sense.
This is a song that creates a soundscape you can truly get engulfed in, and it's something that I enjoyed swimming through but also dancing to.
This is a very danceable single and again, it creates such a lush feel and aesthetic because of all the synth and key work that's being done along with that great, classic house style beat and bringing in those vocals to add an extra layer of texture to everything making the whole track feel a bit more deepening.
For me, this is even a bit cinematic. It's not really just about the spacious or ambient underbelly of the song, but it's more about how the vocals are performed and how the entire thing has this natural and forward-moving flow.
You can hear a slew of influences coming through during the songs unfolding, and the artist doesn't outstanding job of creating builds and breakdowns that burst into play and create climatic sections that hit with a bit of a punch.
The production on this entire thing was stellar, and you can tell that he had a ton of fun creating this.
It's vivacious, colorful, and it also boasts a bit of personality and character along with it.
This element also comes from the lyrics and the vocals.
To me, this was a beautiful combination of melody and love for the craft of creating and producing electronic music that thrives off of several elements like emotion, vibrancy, and that hint of edge.
It's been quite some time since I have heard a song that blends color and edginess as well as this one does.
This is a synth-pop soiree, and you should move the couch back before playing this one because you end up wanting to dance around the living room.
This was such a great approach and a wonderful way of combining those classic or vintage elements with these fresh ones. Being able to create a song that gives me bouts of nostalgia is refreshing, not just because I grew up in a certain time listening to this kind of music, but more because he was able to spin it into something a bit refreshing and new.
You can tell there was a lot of attention to detail during the creation of the song because the arrangements had breakdowns, and bridges were all perfectly placed and gave the song a sense of feeling alive and breathing.
However, it never loses that character or personality the entire time, and that may be the most important aspect of the entire thing.
I absolutely adore all the synth choices. The tones of those keys and synths is everything on this track, and he did an outstanding job of perfectly placing those so that you get the old school feel at times, but at other times, you get massive drive, and it makes you just want to jump up out of your seat.
Some people will call this dance pop, others will call it alternative or dream pop, some might even just call it tech-house, but for me, this is a synth-pop banner, and it came through with such amazing and vivid soundscapes that it stuck with me for hours after it ended.
With the release of such a well-woven single, we wanted to have a chat with the man behind the magic to find out where this track came from and what might be coming next for the artist, along with how he does his thing.
Here's what happened
RAG: Let's talk about "Unique Soul"! This captured classic indie-pop approaches with a house and dance pop mix! Where did this track come from?
- This song I wrote a few years and it wasn't ready for my first album, so I held it over and it was first song I finalized with my then new producer.
Some of my previous songs the music came from collaborators but this tune I would have more input in the sound I wanted by using reference tracks of songs that I like. Then the collaborator came back and forth via email until I found something I liked. Then after good practice with backing track I went live into a studio to complete final version.
RAG: I'm hearing a few different approaches on this song! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
- I am an 80's child (did virtually all my schooling in that decade) and in this period is where your musical tastes can be formed and for me the 80's is my strongest influence. I do like songs before and after that period as well due to my fathers influence and the songs we studied in performing arts course and other singing lessons.
The reference tracks I used for this song where unknown artists that I did a search for on Spotify.
RAG: When did this all start for you as an artist?
- In late 90's I tried to cultivate a childhood dream to be an actor. In a performing arts course, they suggested I do singing lessons as I was learning saxophone as well as acting. I fell in love with singing. At end of course in 2000 I would quit acting, sax and focus on singing and music.
- Singing was more a hobby for years after that playing covers at various gigs but things changed around 2018 when in a dream I had the vision for Wizardom. I was tired of sharing other people's words. I had lyrics to share and I was ready to share them using the wizard character as a confidence booster and marketing angle. After many years of not feeling good enough or confident as I was shy and quiet person not an extroverted rock star, I gave it a go.
RAG: Are you performing live right now? Any touring in support of this release?
- Haven't been performing for a while. I did a big launch for my previous album
"Synthcronicity " but because I held onto the first album for so long, once I released it I was ready to move to new songs.
That last performance was Dec 2023, so this year I want to return to performing with upcoming releases after "Unique Soul". Look forward to sharing my new direction and songs on the stage.
RAG: Did you record this in a home studio setup, or did you go to a big studio for this?
- I am more the singer and songwriter, so I don't play an instrument or produce (I tried but stuck with vocals) . I get help from collaborators to do to backing track. I learn it and then take it into a big studio to do final version, which was "Soggy Dog Productions " in my hometown, Melbourne, Australia. I have used them for all tracks but one so far.
RAG: Now that this is out, what's next for you as an artist?
- I am multi dimensional artist so I use other tools, platforms to share my message not just music. I am looking at non music income streams eg writing books, educational programs, TedX talk etc
Musically it would be releasing 2nd single plus more singles (then album), unique shows and then tour it , merchandise etc. I have had record label interest , so have to decide whether to go with the promotional company or continue on my own. It is tough decision as being older and quirkier , I want to keep as much control of my direction and not be dictated to. I do need marketing and administrative support though.
RAG: Are you planning any music videos in the near future?
- I did my first full length music video for this song. It is on YouTube. I will do more but not sure about spending thousands on one like other artists do. Not easy when you are independent how best to use your resources. I still have a day job to fund my music and creative business. So will do music videos but no fancy ones yet.
RAG: Who's in your headphones right now?
- I always like to listen to various artists from different genres. It is random. Although Spotify is not good for artists, I do use it for meditations, chill out, to exercise and podcasts. Some random artists currently listening to are Erasure, George Harrison, some Australian artists, Oasis, One Republic, Lenny Kravitz etc. Only Erasure is currently related to my genre of music.
RAG: This was a pretty big track! Was it a big undertaking? How long did it take to finish this?
- Each part didn't take long. Lyrics were completed years ago. Backing track a few days. I practice it for a few weeks and then around 3 hours in studio to do vocals and producer completing final version.
My songs are done in parts and timeframe never the same for each project. Depends on availability of collaborators and producers and working around my life/work.
RAG: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
- A more electronic and dancier beat than my previous album but lyrics still inspiring.
RAG: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
- The message of the song is to embrace who you are, your authentic self. We are all "Unique Souls" and should express it to the world in our own way.
