Reagan Browne returns with a new EP that spans such a great range of songwriting and blends elements of rock, country, Americana, folk, singer-songwriter, and blues, all packed into this five-song EP that also tells some great stories and gives some detail into the artist's life.
The release is called Runnin' Red Straight Through A Neon Light, and doesn't waste much time getting to some of the record's great staples with its first track, "Risen With The Wind".Â
This is a perfect example of a track that paints a picture for you. He tells such a great story from that personal perspective, letting you know that everything that's coming through is super authentic, and that's what you want when you listen to a song like this.
This one means more on a rock sort of backbone, but still has that southern underbelly to it, which is something I love, and all of the songs really boast.
You can't get away from that southern soul with this record, and if you're not familiar with the artist himself, a lot of his music keeps to that southern undertone super well and gives you hints of country and Americana influence even on the songs that rock out a little harder.
What are the things that work so well with this track in particular is the precaution. The drumming helps this track come through with such a vivacious approach and a unique liveliness.
This is definitely a very spirited track and already starts to give you the feel and aesthetic of what a lot of this record will provide. It's got such a wonderful blend of this colorful and flavorful approach and such personality behind everything as well.
This is an artist who certainly puts pieces of himself in his music, and this entire EP is no exception to that rule.
One of my favorite tracks on the record is called "Livin' With The Top Down", and this is one that most certainly hits a more country in an Americana Vibe.
It's got a cleaner tonality to it with amazing guitar work, and you have organs that fill the background with a bit of thickness, giving elements of classic rock influence as well, while the vocals are deep and a bit robust. This was a song that showed a different side of his personality, and the attention to detail in the production is something that I noticed as well.
Some gorgeous layers of guitars overlap each other, this great pop-oriented beat giving the song A perfect flow, and the way that the songs can blend genres like this is pretty incredible at times.
"Let's Do Crazy", was also an excellent single and shows some of the pop sensibility that the songs can push forward as well. You can hear heavy country influence in this one, especially in the vocals, but also in some of the twang of the guitars.
This whole thing had a lot of attention to detail paid to the tones of the instruments. The way the guitars come through differently in each track is so important to the aesthetic of the entire album in full.
You can tell that Reagan really was attentive to making sure these tracks came through with a particular soundscape, and that's part of why this is an EP you should listen to from start to finish.
Listening to a few songs won't really give you the full range of what the EP offers.
There are no two songs that are alike; each one showcases a different side of his personality and artistry, and there's a slew of influences that are brought to the table, which can only be heard in full by listening to the whole record.
Still, he sticks strongly to that southern tonality, which is what he does best. His vocals are always kind of robust, but they're also dynamically balanced so that during verses, they can be a little calmer, and then when the right time comes, he starts belting and getting more intense.
This adds higher climatic elements and different kinds of intensities to the record exactly where they are supposed to be.
There's definitely a lot going on, especially for a record with just five tracks on it. You get a lot of that inner thought that comes filling out, descriptive lyrics that are really well portrayed and articulated so that you can understand exactly what the stories are about and where he's coming from with them.
You can also particularly hear how he's coming from a very personal perspective on certain tracks because of the way he writes his lyrics.
Songs can feel connected because of things like that, and this record is full of those elements.
All in all, I think he just had a lot to say, and he expresses himself with his music quite clearly, with an amazing blend of lush instrumentation and vocals that hit hard when they need to showcase some soul and heart when it comes down to it.
I think that's what we all want when we hear a country or an Americana record. We want something with heart, and that's exactly what this delivers.
Absolutely check this truck out as soon as you get a chance because you certainly won't be let down, especially if you're a lover of Americana country, folk, Rock, pretty much anything that has some dynamic to it and a sense of authenticity.
You certainly will not be disappointed in one bed.
The artist also has some excellent previous releases, and if you like this one, you should check those out as well. Everything's on the artist's Spotify page.
Dive into it and see what it does for you.
