Minimalist ambient composer Mighty Joe Belson creates disarmingly powerful music with ample spaciousness suitable for deep reflection and creative insight. The atypical beauty and subtlety of the performances gives the listener the strange sensation of being suspended in air. His new release "The Process of Individuation" is out on April 24, 2026 via Necessary Vice. A true musical exploration of the oceanic, murky realms of the inner self, this immersive release should appeal to fans of Kara Lis-Coverdale, Max Richter, Ludovico Einaudi, Trent Reznor and Whitelabrecs.
With "The Process Of Individuation," Mighty Joe Belson presents an interior voyage inspired by the Jungian concept of coming into harmony with one's unconscious Self. Like the initial spark of musical inspiration, the Self often appears during moments of idleness, and in dreams. So it was with this song. Mighty Joe explains:
"'The Process Of Individuation' is a work born of dreams. I have always been fascinated by dreams and their interpretation, and often hear the beginnings of my music in them. After learning about Carl Jung's ideas concerning Individuation and self actualization, I started paying attention to them even more. I really believe that if you listen to your dreams, your life can be better."
As a composition, "The Process Of Individuation" follows the path of one mind exploring the inner Self. It begins with a simple repeated chord progression and unfolds in added layers of melody, creating an increasingly-complex picture of the Psyche. While beautiful at first, it eventually becomes too much, and disharmony sets in. The mind becomes overloaded with introspection, and is on the verge of shutting down, and then - epiphany: the truth was always there, right at the beginning. Returning to the opening chords, the song fades.
As a single, "The Process Of Individuation" is a departure for Joe. Heretofore releasing electronica, guitar instrumentals, and two notable classic jazz albums, this solo piano work stands apart. Yet, it fits into his greater scheme of telling stories without words. Later this year, Joe will be releasing a solo album of songs played on the bass, or "BassSongs," and the goal will be the same: to take the listener somewhere with music alone.
The stunning cover artwork is by Romain Bonnet. The music video is by Karl Demicoli.
