A new record from Galan Trio is a series of brilliant performances from many composers, all done with violin, piano, and cello. One of my favorite instrumental combinations, and this is an album that completely displays exactly why that is.
The album showcases a hefty set of works spanning 21 pieces, delivering elegantly performed textures and aesthetics that all have somewhat unique atmospheres.
The first track is a brilliant introduction to the record itself. Christopher Dobrian's "Shadow Play", which features such outstanding layers of those tones, almost dripping onto each other and bringing you these weeping melodies, especially from the violin.
This piece was pretty breathtaking and is over 13 minutes in length.
Between the three instruments, you have a culmination of emotion that is almost ever-changing, giving off everything from the mysterious to the sullen and more.
We also have theatrical and exciting pieces from Cindy Cox, giving you robust piano performances that push wonderful segments of intensity that you just don't expect.
One of the most beautiful pieces on the record, in my opinion, is Pamela Madsen's "Fragment from the Wasteland: Death by Water", which gives you a brilliantly invasive sort of feel. You can almost sense the struggle throughout certain parts of the track, as everything becomes so big and extreme.
That element of fierceness can be a bit powerful and definitely comes through heavy-handedly throughout this piece.
This is followed by a segment of pieces from Deborah Kavasch titled From Here to There.
These pieces are beautifully performed as well and feel a little introspective and spirited at times.
The piano work during these pieces is one of my favorite aspects of the record, and the dynamic approach to the instrument is unbelievable.
The strings sort of swell and give you a little bit of a cinematic feel.
The way the keys trickle and patter is something that just stays with you.
There is such a beautiful array of approaches throughout the course of this album, and it falls under what most would consider to be classical or even contemporary classical, bordering on chamber music, but it all just feels emotional, picture painting, storytelling, and mood building.
The songs take turns that you don't expect, they have those bursts of intense moments that take you by storm, and can be smooth, dreamlike, and thought-inducing.
It's records like these that let your mind go free. The songs do set the moods and the aesthetics, as I mentioned earlier, but it also allows your mind to roam where it will.
While songs unfold, you imagine scenarios in your head, visuals pop up out of almost nowhere, and certain elements flutter around in your brain for days after pieces have ended.
Records like this one or a full experience.
Now, this is a large chunk of work.
As I said before, it's 21 pieces of music composed by 14 different people.
Some of those are single pieces, While others have three to four song segments that go together.
It's a lot to chew on and plenty to delve into and swim through.
The full album spans 2 hours and 30 minutes in length.
If you listen to it all, you will have to snap yourself back into reality when it's all over.
Listening to the full album is an amazing endeavor because it takes you on this set of different Journeys. The segments and songs are like chapters in a book.
Not only do I suggest checking out the whole thing if you can, but I also think you should do it with headphones on.
This is one of those unique records that, listening with headphones, sort of intensifies what's going on.
The record is called Kinesis, Vol 3, and it is an absolute opus.
The Galan Trio is Petros Bouras performing the piano, Babis Karasavvidis on the violin, and Marina Kolovou performing the cello.
You will definitely have to listen to this record to get a full grasp of everything I'm saying.
So, don't waste any more time. Go and listen to this right now.
