GUIDES returns with their explosive new single “FAILURE/DEFINES,” available everywhere on June 17. Following the momentum of their recent release “DRAIN,” the track pushes the band even deeper into the emotionally charged territory that has quickly defined their emerging identity. Combining the textured aggression of nu metal with the urgency and atmosphere of post hardcore, “FAILURE/DEFINES” captures the tension between destruction and self realization through crushing riffs, layered melodies, and unfiltered emotion.
The single continues GUIDES’ collaboration with producer Zac “ZROKK” Diebels of Simon Says, Key to Arson, and Automatic Static. Inspired heavily by the late 90s and early 2000s Sacramento heavy music scene, vocalist and songwriter Jonathan Joseph viewed working with Diebels as a defining creative milestone. Together, the band and producer have sharpened GUIDES’ sonic identity into something more focused, intentional, and emotionally immersive while preserving the raw intensity at the center of the band’s sound.
“FAILURE/DEFINES” reflects a period of emotional conflict, personal setbacks, and rebuilding. Written during a time marked by uncertainty, pressure, and constant transition, the song explores themes of identity, self worth, and the struggle to move forward while confronting failure head on. The track channels that unrest into a cathartic release, balancing vulnerability with aggression in a way that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Built on visceral live performances and a growing reputation throughout the regional heavy scene, GUIDES has shared stages with artists including Sevendust, Taproot, Cold, Orgy, Attack Attack!, and Simon Says. Their 2023 debut EP When Everything Reverses introduced a sound rooted in heavy instrumentation, atmosphere, and emotional depth, while newer material showcases a band growing more confident and deliberate with every release.
Drawing influence from bands such as Deftones, Taproot, Staind, Finch, Thursday, and AFI, GUIDES continues refining a sound that merges heaviness with emotional resonance and dynamic songwriting. With Jonathan Joseph on vocals, Tim Evans on drums, and Zach Hess on guitar and bass, the band enters this next chapter with a sharper vision and renewed purpose.
