A fresh new single from Booke gives off plenty of that holiday spirit in the form of a smooth, soulful, R&B track, coated and pop, and with a very vivacious and bright soundscape that feels completely warm and inviting.
"Spend It" blends those classic R&B elements with current ones and gives the whole thing a very polished and sort of glimmering aesthetic, which serves the song well because it is indeed quite uplifting and focused on spending your time with that special someone.
The holiday season means a lot of different things to people. For a lot of us, it has more to do with spending time with loved ones than anything else, and that is part of why this time of year is so special.
The sentiment of being able to spend that time with the people around you, taking moments to reflect on all that's happened and all you've been through with them, is quite a special thing, and the way Booke puts everything lyrically is cut and dry.
This is a welcoming track, and it feels amazing to listen to.
You have these hip hop elements in the underbelly of it all, loads of lush instrumentation, bringing things to a very robust and again, pop overtone, and it all comes together like puzzle pieces.
For me, some of the vocal hooks during the verses are as catchy as the chorus is. This is something I adored because there are a lot of different parts about the song melodically that sit around in your brain long after the song has ended.
It's not just a song about the holidays. It's a song about your special person or people.
I think we need more music like this in general. Music that lets you reflect on your life and how the people you're surrounded by affect that.
At times, we forget how impactful our loved ones are in our day-to-day, but when you hear a song like this, it's a reminder.
It lets you remember that you really wouldn't be who you are without those people in your life.
The vocals have such a shine to them. The whole thing is gleaming with the hardest presence and that sort of boisterous but smooth vocal approach, giving off a silkiness, but also this thriving energy that is completely infectious.
You very quickly find yourself paying a lot of attention to the lyrics, and when you do that, thoughts and memories of your own pop into your head. This is how connected the song can actually be when you listen to it.
There's a lot to chew on here. That course is massive and perfectly blends the pop and R&B elements seamlessly.
The song also has plenty of drive. The beat is a bit heavy-handed, which I really liked, and loads of synths and keys fill the space so that you have a lushness and full-bodied soundscape that only works to push that sort of joyful and appreciative, grateful and excited energy even further.
One of my favorite parts about the track is this little bridge before the final chorus that comes in, and you can hear some jingle bells in the background, sort of reminding you that this is definitely a holiday single, and that sentiment of love is all over it.
When you get to that last chorus, it's gigantic. There are layers of vocal tracks, call-back singing, and everything is full throttle. You have the biggest course at the end, and I think that's a beautiful way to sort of build to a final climactic moment.
This is certainly a song that will stick with me and serves very well to give you a little boost during the holiday.
Now is a perfect time to sit back and reflect on everything that's happened, even Christmas having just passed. This is a song that lets me still feel the joyous moments of watching my loved ones open gifts.
It's outstanding how Booke was actually able to capture that kind of spirit and display it musically so well.
I love a song that connects with me on this level. I'm sure it will hit you as well, so have a good listen to "Spend It", because it's not just about him, it's about all of us.
Take a deep dive into this track while you can, and while you're at it, you should certainly check out some of his previous releases like "Fire", which pushes a more electronic and synth-pop approach, still blended with loads of that pure, soulful R&B, but in a different sense.
Check all of this out now so you can hear exactly what I'm talking about.
