A new release from The Drop Jonnies has a sort of vintage rock approach and tonality as they boast a soundscape that feels like something released in the late 70s or early 80s and blends this amazing post-punk, indie rock, and punk rock styles together and are able to create such a robust character Within the record's three song spectrum.
The Naked single really hits this amazing aesthetic that's completely nailed due to the guitar tone, the whole songwriting approach, and the performances of the songs as well.
These songs make you think of classic post-punk and punk rock sounds, and you can hear these different influences coming in through the music with each individual song and because of that it has a lot to offer.
Some of these tracks have a more vast and mellow feel to them but other ones have a more driving and sonically impactful, harder rock approach but whatever you get, you're getting a lot of that personality in there and I think that's what you end up getting attached to from the get-go.
What really grabbed me about a lot of the stuff is the performance because the energy is unbelievable almost as if these songs were recorded live on the floor and the players involved were just feeding off each other the entire time.
These songs all give off that kind of feel so even if I'm wrong about the whole live on the floor recording part of it, listening to this record certainly makes you want to go see them live because if the energy is captured this well on record, then seeing them live must be amazing.
You also get different levels of honesty throughout the songs as well, so you end up getting attached to some of the lyrical content as well as the catchy and vibrant music.
I adore stuff like this because it doesn't really stray from what they want to do, and you can hear that in the music. There's a slew of influences that come together and they're releasing this music that is a pure passion project and you can absolutely tell that everyone in this band has a love for their craft and when I say that I don't just mean playing guitar or singing or playing drums, I mean writing songs together I'm putting them out into the world.
One of the other reasons this record is so fun is because a lot of the songs are very danceable and they have amazing grooves but still keep that classic and vintage rock aesthetic strong, so they never lose that feel throughout the record and this makes everything very confluent.
One of my favorite tracks is the first one which is called "I Like Your Shoes" because it's so damn catchy that you end up humming this song in your head especially that vocal melody from the verses and the only way to satiate that is to go and listen to it again so it's really smart songwriting and they're able to pull off both musical and vocal hooks non-stop throughout this release.
Then you have songs like "Dirty Dog" which leans way more towards the thrashy punk rock and sonically driving sound I mentioned earlier but it's still keeps to this classic feel and sounds like a song that you put on a mixtape in 1983 and just found it in the garage and put it on.
To me, I find it outstanding that these guys captured that sound so well probably because it's what they listen to, but I also like how they are a little bit eclectic, and each song displays almost a different decade in music to an extent.
It really showcases the band's ability to write songs with fewer boundaries than you may be used to which is something I think a lot more band should be doing these days.
This whole record gave me a warm and welcoming feeling inside because I grew up listening to a lot of classic kinds of punk rock, definitely loads of postpunk, and I can tell you right now that these guys nail every aspect of those genres incredibly well in just these three songs alone.
The Drop Jonnies is absolutely a band I'm going to be paying a lot more attention to from here on out and if you like this kind of stuff you're going to really fall in love with this release.
But, don't just take my word for it, have yourself a listen and listen to the whole record not just one song.
