A Spotlight Interview with Tonty

A new R&B banger from Tonty was just dropped and it's got an extremely lush tonality that comes through with a cinematic backbone and an incredibly colorful approach which shines with character from beginning to end.

"I'm Tryin' Pt.2" has a very particular energy that wraps itself around you and sort of engulf you in the song and soundscape itself.

This artist has a hell of a voice and doesn't hold back letting it show or shine with her singles. Nor should she with a voice like that.

She's got an absolutely natural soul that just attaches itself to you and sort of floats around with you even after the song is ended.

The beat in production or classic and well done with a clear sheen that gives the whole song this nice polish but all in all it's really Tonty who sets out to impress not only with the upfront vocal in her delivery on that being amazing, but those backing vocals as well floating around through the atmosphere create such an additional vibe.

This aspect of the track alone is something that impresses me maybe even the most because the way she does her backing vocals are like instruments themselves; they create other rhythms that bounce in between the main ones and being able to pull off something like that is incredible.

Most of all you can hear a lot of heart that's put into the song and when you listen to this whole thing it's so full-bodied and has such a great hook that you just know there was so much attention to detail that went into it.

This is something that obviously shows the artist's absolute love for the craft and this is a heavy attribute as to why everything came out so well.

Now, when you jump into the song and you end up loving it which you will, I would definitely suggest going back through her catalog and checking out some of her previous EPs and singles dating back to early 2021.

You don't need to start from the beginning, but if you build yourself up to the new single you can kind of see her evolution as a songwriter and as an artist a little bit and that's a fun thing to do.

With the release of "I'm Tryin' PT.2", we wanted to have a chat with Tonty to find out more about where the song came from and what might be coming up next for the artist.

Here's what happened.

RAG: This single came through huge and soulful! Where did this track come from?

I wrote this track as a sequel to I'm Tryin' from my debut EP called Romeo's Dream. It has a different mood for sure, though.

RAG: When did this all start for you musically?

I've been singing my whole life. Music is who I am. It's the truest part of me.

RAG: This trac has some great styles! Can you give us some of your top musical influences?

Sure! I'm most influenced by powerhouse divas like Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, Mariah Carey. But also soulful songstresses like Jazmine Sullivan, YEBBA, SZA.

RAG: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?

I'm an arts administrator and voice teacher. My 2020 goal was to make music and the arts my full-time job and I'm halfway there!

RAG: Who's in your headphones right now?

Sip Into Something Soft by Hiatus Kaiyote

RAG: Are you doing any live performances right now?

I am! I have a performance on March 3rd and Im also performing as Effie White in Dream Girls at BlackRock Center for the Arts in late April.

RAG: This single feels like a big undertaking, is there any advice you'd give to other up and coming artists out there?

Honesty, every musical project is a big undertaking! Haha I'd say: never compare yourself. You are you. You are your only competition. Real talk

RAG: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?

I'm hoping to release new singles throughout the year, some with a 90's vibe. Some with a funk pop vibe. Just a lot of fun or encouraging or confident messages

RAG: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?

I will always be here for you to have a place where you will feel wanted. With me, you'll find comfort and LOVE. Period! Lol Love you!
