A brand new single release from Locketls delivers a raw and stripped down, pure Blues approach, complete with guitars that have just the right kind of crispness to them, giving things a slightly dirty and classic approach, along with vocals that ooze soul, and the whole thing puts you right there in the moment.
"Like Lightnin" is an absolute, instant classic to me. This is because you very rarely hear a song that makes you feel like you just watched a live performance.
As I said before, it has such a rare way of putting you right there with the song itself, in the moment that it's impossible to turn away from
This track is something that showcases an artist who has a pure love for certain kinds of music and just decided to write this perfectly balanced and again, raw style version of a track, so that you get this vintage aesthetic along with it.
This is one of the reasons I dig this song. It has a genuine and authentic vintage tonality the whole way through. It's recorded very well. And without all the bells and whistles attached to it, so that you have the purity of the art form right there, in your face.
The guitar tone is absolute perfection. It gives you that warm sort of feeling. The way the guitars are performed is absolutely everything. You get those classic bands and just as much soul coming from the guitars as you get from the vocals, which is something you just rarely come across.
This is for fans of artists like Skip James. Delivering this real deal Blues feel that you just can't get away from.
This is the track that really sticks with you, and it does boast a bit of a cinematic undertone as well.
The whole thing with this track is that it's not exactly reinventing the wheel, of course. But what it is doing is creating an atmosphere. It's giving you something you haven't heard in a long time. That uncut and unfiltered, raw Blues approach that you hear on record, and immediately want to go see her performing live.
It's not often that you hear a track on record and immediately want to go see that artist in a live performance setting. This is a huge exception to that rule simply because this is what it must be like.
The whole thing feels like it was recorded live on the floor, and the energy flow is just natural.
Now, having said all that, there is a full band version of the track that comes across much differently. It has live percussion, harmonica, keys, and more. This version of the track is faster-paced and gives you a different vibe. It is a great version of the track, but for me, the raw and stripped-down version just does more.
If I were to go see it live, I'd want the artist and her guitar. Now, if I want to go see her live and she has the full band, I'd probably be just as satisfied, but I would want her still to do at least a few songs with that stripped-down approach.
There's just something more personal and genuine about it.
Again, the full band version is awesome. It's got a more Southern, almost classic rock style feel to it, with all the extra instrumentation adding more soul and different areas, and bringing together that live performance feel and a new setting.
It doesn't have that Skip James feel, though.
The full version, which is actually titled "Like Lightning", is available to listen to as well, but this new and more raw version dubbed "Like Lightnin" drops today, on Halloween.
So, you can feel free to dive into both of these, but I suggest the new version first.
It's been a while since I heard such a classic and vintage approach to a genre that's been around for longer than many others.
She really pulls influences from classic places for this one and nails the aesthetic she's going for from start to finish.
She never goes over the top but instead keeps things perfectly balanced, giving it the soul and authenticity that you want from a song like this.
Check this out now, and I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
