An album release from Jack Kearns gives off a massive level of honesty in such a unique way that songs come through incredibly descriptive at times and have such intense and lush sets of instrumentation that by the time you get halfway through the record you get a great feel for the character of it all. However, you still expect the unexpected to a certain extent and I find that wonderful.
The Carrying Ground album is built with these almost classic songwriting approaches and a very robust and deep-toned vocal style that gives off a cross between rustic and a little bit of grittiness, but again, that's part of what builds so much of that personality and character throughout the record along with the lyrics.
There is a country undertone, and some jazz undertone as well at times. You get this unique sort of electric energy from this record as well, to the point where it feels like a lot of these were recorded live on the floor to an extent and everyone involved with each individual song was feeding off of each other the entire time and that's what makes these songs feel alive and breathing in their own way.
There's a lot that makes this record all its own because it does indeed build and breed an atmosphere that you end up falling right into and it's one of those albums that you have to listen to in full to get the range of what it has to offer.
This is an important attribute because there are certainly some surprises around the corners of this album and there are tracks that come through massive and vast to the point where it feels incredibly cinematic and some of those have elements of a haunt in their underbelly.
For me, I can hear a little bit of Tom Waits influence throughout the release and that's something that I love but at the same time, there's a ton more going on and it's just a very unique approach with something about it that feels oddly welcoming.
This is truly a record that's all it's on and you should listen to this album with headphones on so you can catch all these textures and notes that float through the ether of some of these songs making them expansive.
What hits hard is this beautiful array of instruments that show up throughout the record and how they all add such depth and unique personality to each track.
The whole thing was quite beautifully orchestrated, and you can tell there was a lot of attention to detail throughout the creation of this record, but it never loses that character throughout the entire thing, and it still has this element of looseness to it that feels freeing.
This is a record that was built with far fewer boundaries than the norm and fewer walls that stand around it and I think that's something that makes it special.
It does not conform to any one specific genre and is completely authentic from beginning to end.
You're drawn in and end up getting engulfed in this atmosphere that these songs deliver, which I find not only to be a wonderful escape but also satiating.
