A new single release from Truenemy showcases the band's absolute love for some of the many influences they hold close to their heart. This one in particular happens to be Megadeth, and the track that the band covers is one called "Almost Honest".
Now, first of all, if you're going to attempt to cover any Megadeth song whatsoever, you have to know your chops, know about arrangement, and be unbelievably skilled at your instruments, especially the guitar.
Lucky for them, they certainly are. This is one of the more fine-tuned covers that I've heard in such a long time that I can't even remember hearing one that comes this close to the original.
This was an astounding piece of work that really delivered from start to finish. The reason is that they paid a lot of attention to all the small things that make the song come together. This is a track that fits together like puzzle pieces, and all the little elements that help it's drive or catching this come through, we're really not.
The song starts with a classic riff, and if you've ever heard the original, you know exactly what that is. The drive and energy are pretty spot on as well, and the vocal approach, of course, is a little different but still balances that approach and aesthetic of Dave Mustaine's originals.
The song opens up super well, gets really catchy, and hits some great harmonies during the choruses, but there are also those small nuances that were added.
What I mean by that is simple, little things like a tambourine coming in through the choruses to help build its energy and sort of groove a little bit. This was in the original version as well, and these guys.
What I'm saying is that Truenemy really took their time to take a track that they held deer and recreate it as close to the original as possible. I love this because it's still Truenemy, but they really let their love for songwriting shine by paying that much attention and really keeping things that spot on.
Even the guitar solo is super close to the original one, which is important because the way the guitar solo works is that it gives you a lot of soul and wild bends, but it also segues into the chord changes, and they even paid attention to all of those aspects as well.
This was really cool to hear, and it's a love letter. This whole thing is just a love letter to Megadeth, metal music, and how metal can be catchy, honest, and really well-crafted with amazing detail.
As I said before, you don't really hear covers that come through in this sense. I think because the band is able to really pull off all the bells and whistles, they did so.
If I were able to play guitar like that, I would probably do the same thing.
Now, this is a band that is helmed by Paul Vuocolo, who definitely holds some of the classic metal bands close to his heart. It seems like he grew up with a lot of that music and probably even learned to play guitar because of those bands.
This is most likely why he put so much detail and attention into the recreation of such an iconic Megadeth single.
If you're not really too familiar with Truenemy, then this is an amazing place to start, but I also heavily suggest listening to the EP, Curse of The Lighting Ball, released in 2024.
This is also an EP that displays a lot of love for heavier music, amazing guitar work, attention to detail, and high energy approach that comes through with a memorable aesthetic.
The performance is across this single, and most of the other tracks released are all enthusiastic.
As I said, this one was very true to the original, and even those small details were attended to, but there's also a lot of heart that goes into this.
Recreating a song like this one from a band like Megadeth is no easy feat.
This is an Endeavor I couldn't even imagine approaching. So, to take the time and really include all of the elements that form the entire song, as a whole, was a brilliant idea.
I would be sending this to Dave Mustaine as soon as it was ready.
So, check this truck out now, turn it up, and then dive into some of the previous releases as well, because this is for anyone who loves heavy music that leaves its mark.
Yes, if you're a Megadeth fan, you need to hear this, but it will make you a Truenemy fan as well.
I grew up listening to bands like Megadeth as well and I can definitely tell you that this really pinpoints the same feeling that you get listening to the classics.
Check it out now so you can see exactly where I'm coming from.
