The Story Behind MegaDestroyer’s “Parachutes”

Omaha alternative rock band MegaDestroyer has never shied away from emotional honesty. With their latest single and music video, “Parachutes,” the band channels a deeply personal story into a soaring anthem about resilience, friendship, and hope.

The inspiration behind “Parachutes” is as real as it gets: the aftermath of a close friend surviving a near-fatal shooting in 2013. Rather than sink into darkness, MegaDestroyer transformed the experience into a song built for connection. “In desperate times, we need one another,” says vocalist Colin Moore. “When we fall, it doesn’t have to be a hard landing.”

Recorded with award-winning producer Ari M, “Parachutes” captures the band at a turning point. Lush harmonies and driving guitars underscore lyrics that acknowledge pain but refuse to let it win. Moore describes the recording process as transformative: “It felt huge, like finding something I had been looking for for a long time.”

This spirit of triumph over adversity runs through the band’s evolving sound. MegaDestroyer continues to resist easy categorization, favoring instinct and collaboration over genre labels or trends. “We’d rather make music that actually means something to us and let people connect with it however they want,” Moore explains.

The result is a track that feels both intensely personal and universally uplifting: a testament to the healing power of music and the bonds that help us through life’s hardest moments.
