The Purple Helmets are a re-emerging force in Canadian indie rock. Hailing from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, this former EMI-signed band first made waves in the '90s with a sound that blended British glam, American power pop, and alternative grit. Despite early controversy around their provocative name, Mike Carter, Chris Thibedeau, Jonathan Kini, and Donnie LeBlanc quickly earned a devoted following drawn to their vibrant influences—think Bowie, The Kinks, Big Star, Matthew Sweet, Weezer, and the Gin Blossoms—all filtered through their unmistakable East Coast charm. In 2025, TPH returns with Weirdo Squad, a long-awaited comeback marked by a waterfall release of ten bold, hook-laden tracks. The album, recorded at Ironshore Studios in the Cayman Islands and produced by Paul Suarez (protégé of mixing legend Andy Wallace), showcases the band at their creative peak. It's a masterclass in melodic indie rock—filled with infectious choruses, raw emotion, and refined songwriting. Already earning praise from Jamsphere Magazine and Music Radio Network (USA), Weirdo Squad promises to be one of Canada’s standout indie releases of the year. With their timeless sound and newfound momentum, The Purple Helmets are poised to reclaim their place as one of the most compelling and enduring acts in modern alt-rock.
