The New Mourning: Exploring the Band’s Indie Rock Sound and New Single “Again and Again”

The New Mourning is an Austrian indie rock band formed around musician Thomas Pronai, who started the project in 2018 after touring Germany with Pete Astor. That experience helped inspire him to put together a band focused on the kind of direct, guitar-driven rock that feels just as natural in a live setting as it does on record. Since then, the group has developed its own identity, balancing rough-edged rock sounds with melodic songwriting and an understated, atmospheric approach.

The band's lineup features Thomas Pronai alongside Georg Allacher, Michi Rieder, and Gerald Allacher. Together, they create a sound that draws from indie rock and alternative rock, using layered guitars, steady rhythms, and subtle changes in intensity to keep things interesting. There's a straightforward quality to their music, but the arrangements have enough depth to give the songs a character that goes beyond traditional guitar rock.

The New Mourning first emerged with the 2019 single “Who'd Stop The Sun,” released through Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten. The band later released its full-length debut, When the Light Fades, through Austrian independent label Noise Appeal Records in 2022. The album helped establish the group's approach to songwriting and recording, bringing together a loose, organic feel with a darker, more reflective side. The band continued building on that foundation with Songs of Confusion in 2025.

In 2026, The New Mourning returned with “Again and Again,” a new single released through Noise Appeal Records on September 4. The track continues the band's exploration of guitar-based arrangements and carefully developed layers, allowing the instrumental parts to work together without crowding the song. There's a sense of movement in the way the music unfolds, with the band's restrained approach giving the individual elements room to stand out. An accompanying official music video adds another dimension to the release.

The band also released “I'll Take My Time” earlier in 2026, keeping the momentum going as it works toward its next chapter. With another album planned for 2027, The New Mourning continues to build on the sound it has established through its previous releases. “Again and Again” offers another look at a group that values strong songwriting, textured guitar work, and a natural performance style over unnecessary embellishment.
