AUGUST 27, 2026 (CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA) — Tattoo artist, fine artist, and musician Kirk Edward Nilsen II is expanding his creative presence between Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey at Crown & Anchor  and Charleston, South Carolina at The Edge Tattoo, marking a new chapter in a nearly 20-year career rooted in old-world craftsmanship, architectural design, medieval history, and original,  hand-drawn art. 

Known for large-scale Gothic, medieval, and baroque architectural tattooing, Nilsen has built a highly specialized body of work inspired by cathedral windows, filigree, Victorian frameworks, historic folk design, manuscript-style detail, and old-world architecture. His approach treats the body as a living canvas for architectural and ornamental storytelling, bringing classical forms, medieval concepts, and historical design language into the modern world through permanent, handcrafted work.

For Nilsen, tattooing is one expression of a much larger artistic world. A lifelong student of old-world aesthetics, classical art, medieval imagery, folk traditions, and historic architecture, his work is driven by a deep fascination with the beauty and discipline of the past. Rather than chasing trends or broad commercial appeal, Nilsen creates for a highly specific audience drawn to refined detail, architectural composition, and work that feels connected to another time. Nilsen’s career has long been shaped by travel, lineage, and a refusal to let technology replace the human hand. 

Over the years, he has worked and guested at shops across the United States and Europe, including Bang Bang NYC, Love Hate Tattoo, No Idols NYC, Ganga Tattoo Los Angeles, Vaders Dye Tattoo in Hamburg, Conspiracy Inc. in Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Milan, San Francisco, Austin, Miami, Baltimore, and more.

As Nilsen continues to work between New Jersey and Charleston, he is also leaning further into fine art, expanding beyond tattooing into original hand-drawn pieces, architectural studies, painted works, functional art, and other mediums influenced by Gothic, Spanish, Portuguese, Mediterranean, and medieval design. His fine art practice reflects the same visual language found in his tattooing, but gives him more freedom to explore scale, texture, history, and personal mythology outside the boundaries of the body.

That same world also extends into Nilsen’s solo music project, Spanish Castles, which recently released a new EP, Sombra Del Sol. The project blends classical guitar, flamenco, rumba, Arabic, baroque, gothic, folk punk, Latin, Brazilian, and subtle metal influences. Rooted in his Portuguese ancestry from the Azores and Norwegian family history from Larvik, Spanish Castles reflects Nilsen’s interest in creating music that feels like an ancient story told through sound rather than words.

Nilsen’s work is intentionally niche, attracting clients and collectors who are drawn to old-world detail, architectural composition, and a deeply personal approach to art. Whether through tattooing, drawing, painting, functional objects, or music, his creative output is connected by the same central idea: bringing historic beauty, classical influence, and human craftsmanship into a modern world that often moves too quickly past them.

Outside of tattooing, Nilsen has appeared on Paramount Network’s The Art of Ink, been featured in tattoo podcasts, magazines, and local press, and spent time touring in hardcore and punk bands. He is also a lifelong visual artist, flamenco guitarist, traveler, sailor, and advocate for hand-crafted art in an increasingly digital and trend-driven world.
