Refinement_2026 works best when it lets its contrasts stay visible. Poke A Brain moves between heavier rock passages, smoother grooves, theatrical vocals and more atmospheric ideas without trying to make everything sound like it came from the same template. That gives the record a loose, exploratory character, and even when the transitions are abrupt, there is usually enough personality in the individual tracks to keep things moving.
“WILD IS WEST” opens with a lot of energy and a slightly exaggerated sense of motion that makes it feel almost cinematic. The guitar work gives the track much of its momentum, especially once the solo arrives. “WITH STRINGS ATTACHED” shifts the focus toward the vocals, with the female performance bringing a different emotional tone and changing the shape of the record early on.
“MICE” is one of the more controlled tracks here. The rhythm section settles into a relaxed groove, and the arrangement leaves enough space for the song to breathe. “SYNDROME” moves in the opposite direction emotionally, sounding more reflective and subdued without becoming overly dramatic. That restraint helps it land.
“PEARL” starts from a heavier guitar figure and gradually opens out from there, while “ESCAPE” has a more restless quality that suits the album’s tendency to keep changing direction. “LOST COWBOY” also stood out to me because it feels less concerned with obvious payoff and more interested in sustaining a particular mood.
What makes Refinement_2026 interesting is the way these tracks refuse to settle into one fixed personality. Some songs are driven by riffs, others by groove, atmosphere or vocal performance, and that variety keeps the record from becoming predictable. There are moments where the stylistic range can make the album feel a little scattered, but there is also something refreshing about a project that does not seem overly concerned with maintaining one marketable identity.
Poke A Brain appears more interested in following whatever idea is in front of them than in forcing the material into a single lane. That approach will probably make Refinement_2026 a more natural fit for listeners who enjoy records with sharp turns and uneven edges, but those same qualities are also what give it character.
