Hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Mike Goodrick is breathing new life into pop-rock as he re-enters the music scene with original music for the first time in 15 years. Goodrick has pioneered and built an astonishing community around playing acoustic emo and pop punk covers with Acoustic Emo Night. The event centers around crowds who are connected to the music and still look for spaces that represent that. “I’m someone who stepped away from original music for a long time while staying connected to songs and performing live through the emo night community,” Goodrick says regarding his attachment to the scene. “I’m now finally writing and releasing again from a more mature perspective.” This solo project hones in on the emo, pop punk, and acoustic singer-songwriter genres while exuding a refreshing new outlook. “It’s nostalgic, but it’s also adult. It’s about the way old songs, old relationships, and old versions of yourself can still follow you around,” Goodrick says. Being inspired by icons such as Dashboard Confessional, Mayday Parade and Knox, to name a few, Goodrick creates a nostalgic atmosphere while keeping his music true to who he is as an artist. “A song can take you right back to a relationship, a friendship, a heartbreak, or a version of yourself you barely recognize anymore,” Goodrick says about the content within his music. “My music lives in that space between looking back and moving forward. It’s about old memories that still have teeth.” Goodrick’s return to original music includes songs such as “Songs I Still Skip” and “Try,” marking his first new releases after more than 15 years. “Try” is about being treated like someone’s emotional test run. “It’s about that confusing in-between space where someone acts like they want you, pulls you in, says the right things, then disappears or chooses someone else when things get real,” Goodrick says about the track. “The song is written from the perspective of finally looking back and asking, ‘Was any of that real, or did you just want to see if you could?’” Goodrick is now continuing to explore new territory through his original music. While the songs venture into the same emotional world as the music that first inspired him, they don’t deliver just nostalgia, but what life looks like after maturing. His music reflects the space between who you were, who you are now, and the memories that continue to connect the two.
