What does it mean to be fully alive - for a person, a country, an ocean wave? Should we be content laying low, or instead rising up and connecting with something bigger than ourselves? If ever there was an ideal moment for rising up, leaving no room for doubt about the kind of country America can be, the time to stand up is now. Did the United States grow into the country it became by staring inward and living in the past? Hasn't our success long had everything to do with welcoming the world's largest immigrant population? Though some seem fine with America treading water in a state of suspended animation, for the vast majority of us: how about imagining a future that celebrates our common humanity? Recalling some of the educational experiences that led to this song, I remember my good fortune early on attending a wonderfully welcoming elementary school - a place where teachers taught not only subjects like English, social studies, math, music... but also demonstrated values such as respect and kindness. It was a public school in Northern Virginia named after James Madison, author of the United States Bill of Rights and 'Father' of The Constitution. Sure as our principled fourth president was a visionary—instrumental in creating America's extraordinary system of checks and balances all those years ago—I envision him today, in this tumultuous run-up to November, cheering on a fired-up electorate champing at the bit to reclaim our beloved land of the free from the land of the few.
