An album release from Maria & The Balance delivers quite a lush array of instrumentation and styles with approaches that range from indie and alternative rock, all the way to funk and jazz-inspired songs and it all comes with this robust and colorful personality that you really end up loving by the end of the record.
The Connections album does not stop with the surprises. There are surprises around all the corners of this record and it's the kind of album that you want to listen to from beginning to end so that you can really soak in everything it has to offer.
Diving into a few tracks won't really give you the range or spectrum that the album has to offer as a whole so I really think you should be checking this one out in full.
The instrumentation and performances across the unfolding of this record are outstanding. There is a fire behind every performance here and to an extent, it feels almost like some of these songs were recorded live on the floor and everyone involved was just feeding off each other's energies the entire time.
Listening to this album makes you want to go see Maria and her band live in person because if this kind of energy is captured on record so well, then seeing them live must be intense.
These songs are spirited to say the absolute very least. She's got such a vivacious and robust energy on this record that you can't help but latch yourself onto it and go for the ride.
I feel like there's some classic rock inspiration going on here along with plenty of others but that element in particular stands tall to me.
The way that she performs vocally along with the way the aesthetic of how the songs sound tonally, really gives me this sort of classic rock vibe at certain points of the record.
Her vocal approach is so alive and breathing. There's so much heart, intensity, fire, and vibrancy behind her performance throughout all of these songs, that it's infectious.
This is also the kind of recognition you should listen to in full simply because it does feel like these songs serve almost like chapters in the artist's life.
If you want to get the full picture, you have to listen to the full album.
I love this aspect because that to me, is way more fun. Having the full experience of an album so lush and so robust with character, personality, and energy is just something I crave.
Anyone who loves impactful music craves things like this.
You can tell everyone here is having an absolute ball and that Maria Is someone who's probably been singing since she was a little kid.
The songs can also be a little bit intense lyrically. Some of these songs have pretty heavy-handed messages While others tell kind of detailed stories that come through in a descriptive manner so you can really paint a picture in your head as the song plays through.
It seems like there was a lot of attention to detail during the creation of this record, but it never loses that personality or that heart that it begins with, and this may be the most important aspect of the entire thing.
I was really impressed by a lot of the guitar work as well. The guitars throughout this record are really inventive, impressive, and different from song to song a lot of the time.
Just like Maria herself is able to kind of change characters depending on what the song feels like, the guitar work provides that mood to begin with.
Some songs hit harder with an edgier and more heavy rock tonality while others feel smoother with more of a funky or jazz, contemporary pop, or relaxed approach.
As I mentioned before, you will get plenty of surprises throughout the course of this record but again, this is part of the fun.
Some of these tracks are very danceable and addictive, colorful, and others are ones you get more emotionally attached to.
You can tell this is a record that meant something to the artist and to the band because everyone involved really gave it their all.
This is a record for people who like music that makes you think, feel, or simply provides an atmosphere that you can really soak in.
This album is a full experience and it's incredibly satiating to listen to the whole thing through so for the last time, I'm going to suggest you do it that way.
There are layers of textures with great instrumentation including horns on top of everything else.
The drumming on the record is the main element that gives the song so much liveliness and drive.
Every element of this release pushes the next or, compliments the next.
A massive release from Maria & The Balance, take a deep dive into Connections and remember where you heard it first.
