The new single release from Keeana Kee blends a cultural flair with elements of dance and pop together to create something that has an undeniable ability to get your body moving with deep-pocketed grooves and addictive rhythms, along with alluring vocals and a sentiment that I think some of us can definitely relate to.
"Ex's Funeral" definitely has a bit of a drive to it but it's a smooth one. It pulls you into it and before you know it you're swaying with the rhythm of the track and sort of swimming through the pop overtones of it all.
This track is considered exotic pop. This is because it blends classic pop approaches with elements of afrobeat and loads of tenacious swagger that come together and build something that has an edginess to it, but is also a bit colorful at the same time.
This is absolutely a breakup song. But it's not like your usual approach. It's more about the sense of being free after the breakup as opposed to just the downside of things.
It has a certain kind of spirited underbelly to it that displays a lot of the emotion of freedom, but also brings a slight sense of light-heartedness to it all, so it's not overwhelming.
The artist is joined by Valerie Kaufman, who collaborated on the track with her, and between the two of them, you have an amazing approach and aesthetic.
The chorus is completely addictive. It's got great vocal harmonies, that attitude-riddled approach to singing overall, and I think that's where this sense of empowerment shows the most.
What are the things that really hit me about this track is the way it bends genres at free will.
It certainly has its own thing going on, but it does so by taking those different genres I mentioned earlier and rolling them into one track so that you have something that feels somewhat familiar and very radio-friendly, but also has that bite.
This is exactly what a song like this needs. It needs that little extra bite. It shows its teeth and isn't afraid to go there lyrically, which is one of my favorite aspects about Keeana as an artist in general.
She's able to give you these pieces of who she is by working with real-life experience and putting that into her music so that you can completely understand exactly where she's coming from with things.
Also, the way she puts that attitude on the forefront really makes it work.
You have these great scattered harmonies that come in and out in different parts of the track, beckoning a bit of an indie pop approach, but again, this blends a lot of genres, so it has its own atmosphere, in a sense.
The percussion is a huge element to why the song works so well, not just because it adds a bit of drive, but it adds more of that cultural flair, again bringing some of that afrobeat underbelly to the table, and giving the song a bit of push and allowing it to be insanely danceable.
Showcasing personality is nothing new for Keeana Kee, who has been paving her own path in the LGBTQ+ pop music scene for quite some time and has been making some waves in the process.
This single definitely gives you a sense of exactly why that's happening.
Along with the track comes an insatiable music video that also portrays the artist's character visually, and it lines right up with the song in such amazing ways.
All in all, it's the character and energy that grabs you, but once you're in, you're in. There's no coming back out.
Check this track out right now to see exactly what I mean.
We've taken the liberty of embedding that music video below for your viewing and listening pleasure.
Don't miss this one.
