There is something powerful about looking back at who you were ten years ago and comparing that person to who you are today. Life takes us in unexpected directions, introducing new experiences, different surroundings, and perspectives that change the way we see ourselves. On his new single, “10 Years Ago,” Joshua McCooey explores that journey through reflective songwriting and a warm, melodic sound that feels both personal and relatable.

The song looks at the passage of time, personal growth, and the complicated feelings that come with leaving familiar places behind. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and having spent time in New York City, Joshua brings a sense of distance and nostalgia into the track. The contrast between enjoying the snowfall in New York and reflecting on life back on the West Coast creates an interesting emotional backdrop, capturing that feeling of being somewhere new while still carrying a piece of home with you.

Musically, “10 Years Ago” blends pop-rock sensibilities with a warmer Americana influence. Layers of acoustic and electric guitars establish an inviting foundation, while Joshua's smooth vocals carry the song's reflective message. As the arrangement develops, the rolling snare adds a subtle Southern flavor, giving the track a slightly different character while maintaining its accessible melodies and memorable hooks.

Joshua McCooey's Musical Journey

Joshua's creative background extends beyond songwriting. With early exposure to music, dance, and musical theater, he developed an interest in performance before further exploring his own songwriting in 2020, after getting his first guitar. His experiences studying dance at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York also reflect his broader artistic interests.

His musical catalog began gaining attention with “Spark My Heart” in 2023, a romantic pop-rock single centered on love and emotional connection. His Show and Tell project followed, introducing more of his songwriting and vocal style.

Throughout 2024, Joshua continued developing his sound with releases including “Dance With Me Sophie,” “Smile Paradise,” and “Love Letter.” These tracks explored different sides of his artistry, from romantic guitar-driven pop to R&B-influenced melodies and more intimate ballad songwriting. “Smile Paradise,” in particular, shares a connection with his latest single through its exploration of homesickness and the emotional ties we maintain to familiar places.

His 2025 releases, including “We Don't Die” and “Goodbye Before December,” continued to expand his growing catalog and demonstrate his interest in exploring different moods and musical directions.

Looking Back While Moving Forward

What makes “10 Years Ago” stand out is its ability to connect personal experiences with feelings that many listeners understand. We all have moments when we look back and wonder how our lives might have unfolded differently, whether we are happier now, or what our younger selves would think of the people we have become.

Joshua captures that reflective feeling through thoughtful songwriting, warm guitar textures, and an expressive vocal performance. Rather than simply dwelling on the past, the song encourages us to consider how our experiences and the places we have lived shape who we are today.

With “10 Years Ago,” Joshua McCooey continues to develop his sound while offering a relatable reflection on time, change, and finding your place in the world.
