GRAVE CORPS GET PRETTY, BLOODY, AND COMPLETELY INSANE

Some songs come from months of serious reflection. Others come from a smartass response to a selfie. Guess which one feels more punk rock?
Grave Corps releases its new single and video, “Pretty Insane,” today, dragging listeners through the doors of Hellfire Asylum and locking them inside with Traci Von Krypt, several highly questionable doctors, and whatever remains of reality after the experiment goes bad.
Underneath the blood, broken asylum walls, and general chaos, “Pretty Insane” takes a swing at the expectations placed on women to be attractive but restrained, powerful but agreeable, and aggressive only when it does not make anyone uncomfortable.
Grave Corps’ response is considerably simpler: Why choose?
Traci’s vocals move from erratic verses through brief flashes of reflection before the chorus finally lets the whole mess off its leash. The track delivers the hooks, punk attitude, metal weight, and theatrical instincts that have always powered Grave Corps, while its dark atmosphere gives the madness somewhere to live.
Recorded at Catamount in Cedar Falls with longtime producer and engineer Travis Huisman, “Pretty Insane” feels like a horror story that learned how to throw a chorus.
The Hellfire Asylum
Then there is the video.
Directed by Roman Gamble and produced by Thrash Panda Media, “Pretty Insane” introduces Hellfire Asylum, where a failed experiment has left Traci trapped somewhere between reality and madness. The doctors torment her, visions creep through her fractured mind, and revenge starts looking like the only reasonable option.
The whole thing carries the grime of horror punk and the sleazy visual kick of an old grindhouse reel somebody found under a pile of empty bottles and bad decisions.

“It was physically exhausting, completely chaotic, and ridiculously fun,” the band says, “which is probably the most Grave Corps way possible to make a music video.”
The best part is that the video never cleans up its own mess. Traci may have gotten her revenge, or the entire thing may have happened inside her head. Grave Corps leaves the door cracked open, which is exactly where a story like this belongs.
Neatly explained horror is usually dead on arrival.
“Pretty Insane” proves there are still unexplored rooms inside the monster Grave Corps has been building. Grab a drink, check yourself into Hellfire Asylum, and tell Traci she looks pretty.
Just be careful how you finish that sentence.
