A new release from Special K's just dropped, and the song has a very deepening sentiment that feels a little raw and incredibly relatable to many of us, lyrically descriptive and unafraid, vulnerable and impactful, with music that gives a sort of hazy warmth derivative of Songs written in the 50s or 60s.
"Talk To Me" is a track that focuses on losing a loved one and all the many stages of grief that come along with it. The sentiment of wondering what's happening with that person, where they are, what they're doing, how they feel, all of it is all too genuine throughout the course of the track, and I feel like it's very beautifully woven.
For any of us who have lost someone, this is a song that will speak volumes. It is emotionally bound but keeps things semi-colorful musically. The melodies are sort of bright in a sense, and there is plenty of pop sensibility flowing throughout the veins of the track.
You have beautiful layers of guitars, arpeggiated chords performed on the guitars give that classic 1960s songwriting aesthetic, and this is something that makes perfect sense because the whole song gives you a particular kind of flow.
Again, this is a very authentic track lyrically. You know it's pulled from someplace very real, and that is something that has a lot of impact. In the 50s and the 60s, there was a certain kind of songwriting style and the mood behind a lot of those, at times had a similar sort of approach.
You have acoustic guitars as well that are double-tracked, layering thick melodies and progressions. The vocals are harmonizing a lot of the time and just give this gorgeous melody that sticks in your brain for a long time after the song has ended.
The whole thing comes across powerfully but with a subtle approach. None of it is over the top. It's all very well dynamically balanced and focuses on arrangement and melody, along with, again, very expressive lyrics that are written with very few walls built around them.
I find songs like these to be brave. They say things that a lot of us think when we are in a situation like this. When you lose someone important to you, you have all of these wonders, and you sort of crave the sound of their voice just to hear it once more.
A lot of the song portrays that so intensely, but elegantly at the same time.
The song gives a lot of the inner thought and emotion that comes with the struggles of loss and heartbreak, while still having the understanding that you are looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.
It's not a one-sided track. It takes many roads and showcases both sides of loss, along with a lot of the different phases of grief that you go through.
This is a beautiful track and not just because of how expressive and articulate it is lyrically, but also how the music adds this gorgeous flow to everything.
There are tambourines and additional percussion that make the track feel sort of big but still very subtle and almost delicate in a sense.
Some great changes are going on that also lean towards that '60s or even '70s feel, and when I say that, what I mean is almost across between classic rock, folk, folk rock, and singer-songwriter. All of that is encompassed in this one single, and that's something that speaks volumes for the project.
This is a song that is not just one genre, but instead bends genres to create something that just gives off a particular atmosphere that sticks.
Special K's is actually a studio collective and has a bit of a reputation for creating songs by bending genres based on the moment and how they are feeling.
I think this would be an absolutely perfect example of exactly that.
The production is outstanding, the songwriting is very well thought out, and there's a lot of attention to detail in how they wanted to portray the emotion and have the song attach itself to those lyrics properly.
This is a song that you'll remember, and for a lot of us, it will be very impactful, relatable, and brave.
Don't just take my word for it, though, have a listen to this track right now and see what it does for you. I'm sure this will affect you.
