A Wonderfully Woven Blend of Classical and Smooth Jazz from Dimitri K

An immersive new release from Dimitri K. and Karen Devroop delivers a soiree of smooth jazz melted into a cinematic backbone that all comes through with lush, flowing atmospheres that are very easy to get swallowed up by. Of course, I mean this in the best way possible.
This record portrays all different kinds of moods and certainly boasts a little bit of emotion at different parts of songs, but the whole thing has a life of its own, and when you listen to it from beginning to end, in one sitting, it's quite a wonderful experience.
These pieces are built with a lot of attention to detail. The arrangements and progressions are brilliant; there are loads of melodic hooks and outstanding performances throughout the record's course.
Karen Devroop performs the saxophone throughout the record, and this is a key element of the entire aesthetic.
Again, there's lots of this sort of smooth jazz going on and Karen absolutely phones the instrument. The performances throughout the entire thing are brilliant, from the keys to accordion, percussion, and so much more.
However, the saxophone is just silky and really laced into the record in a way that supports it beautifully.
The record is titled Shades of Elegance, and the first and title track certainly doesn't waste much time getting to the point.
It's not just a clever title; this record is elegant through and through.
You can hear this theatrical element thriving throughout this single, along with the entire record.
This first track has some great changes, beautiful string orchestrations, guitar work, and it all feels almost like something that was created in the late 70s.
I love the vibe that it gives off because it does blend semi-vintage tonalities with fresh approaches, and this creates something engaging and almost ever changing has it unfolds.
New textures are added to the track, which really come through with a graceful performance, and the changes that happen throughout the song alter the moods of it as it plays through.
I love the guitar tone here because it also captures this classic texture and tone, and it works perfectly with the rest of the song.
I think the composition is the most impressive part of all of it. Dimitri did an outstanding job of bringing these different changes to life and creating a song that feels alive and breathing.
"Set of Emotions" is the next track, and this one has a little bit of a different level of intensity to it. The rises and falls of intensity are gorgeous here. The percussion does a great job of helping give the song a little bit of drive right in the spots where it needs it.
You can tell there was a lot of thought that went into this one as well, but then again I can say that for the entire record.
Songs like "Stone Beach", a service some of my favorite pieces, simply because it gives such a spirited and warm set of tones.
I feel like this is definitely an important aspect of the record itself. The whole thing delivers layers of tones that are warm and welcoming.
It's been quite some time since I've heard a record that was disinviting.
These have a beautiful vastness in their underbellies as well. There's always this sort of spacious feel, mostly due to the string orchestrations that are happening beneath the surface of some of these tracks.
Again, Dimitri can capture these particular kinds of aesthetics by building the backbone of each piece and having certain instruments lay in the Forefront so that you have something to focus on as it washes over you.
Listening to this record with headphones on is one of the best ways to soak it in.
When you listen with headphones, you kind of escape into it. This is a record that serves as a great escape and will certainly pull you away from whatever you're doing and whatever you are and put you in this different headspace for a little chunk of time
So, you have this blend of full, filmic orchestrations going on, along with jazz mixed in, smooth harmonies and melodies that layer atop string sections, performed by saxophone, piano, guitar, and more.
You can clearly hear a slew of influences and genres coming through if you listen to the whole record.
The release closes with "Cross Atlantic", and this is a great piece because it focuses on a lot of the same instrumentation and changes in mood, motion, and shimmer, but it also has this great rolling snare drum that is pretty consistent throughout its course, giving it a little bit of a different feel.
To me, this was a great closer to the release.
And Dimitri is a composer and songwriter who's able to bring visions to fruition. These songs have a lot to chew on, and I feel like he's really able to capture such a perfect tonality while paying a lot of attention to the dynamic balance of the pieces.
Although Karen's saxophone performances are on the Forefront most of the time, it's the songwriting that really makes the difference.
