From the mind of Matt Malsky comes a beautifully detailed and character-rich piece of music in the form of an operatic theatrical Act and as you dive into this release you dive into the story of it all which is in-depth and has a story that to some can be very relatable.
The piece is called A Dill Pickle, and it is a chamber pop opera delivered in one act, so you get the full story behind this piece from beginning to end and expands about 52 minutes in length.
This piece of work was built with a lot of attention to detail, and it certainly feels like it began with the storyline and grew from there.
I have no idea what it takes to have the kind of mindset to put together an operatic storyline complete with not only music and words, but an actual theatrical act that goes along with everything and serves as your visual enticement.
I would imagine it takes a lot of focus and a lot of love for the craft which Matt obviously has both of.
This is a story that is about relationships and is based in 1914 where a man and a woman who are ex-lovers meet again in a cafe after a six-year absence from each other. They go through all these phases of good and bad with great detail at times and so as they're going through recollections and emotionally driven conversation, things do indeed become relatable for a lot of people and the listener can understand we're both of these characters are coming from as they do their thing.
Now, again this is an operatic piece of music that you can listen to and still get the story, but it also comes with a full video of a live performance that drives everything home even more so because the acting and the performance from both characters is amazing and their voices come through robust and powerful.
The whole thing is billed with the male and female operatic vocals who again both do an outstanding job delivering driving performances, but it also comes with a string trio between viola, violin, and cello so you have this somewhat lush soundscape that goes along with the piece, and it all comes together seamlessly.
Again, I can imagine how much work goes into something like this, but it was intense to watch and listen to, and you get pulled into the story of these characters very quickly and there's an amazing way that they keep you there with them throughout it all.
A chamber Opera is something that can be somewhat of an acquired taste but then again, a lot of different music is if you think about it.
Having said that, this is definitely for people who love theatrical pieces of music, string trios, and operatic movements because it does an amazing job of delivering excellent performances by all parts and Matt absolutely nailed every little aspect about the way this whole thing should work.
You can watch the video of the full piece on the Bandcamp page, and I suggest you do.
Take a look and see how this affects you.
