A fresh EP release from 32 Ohm delivers a vivacious approach and a blending of soundscapes influenced by everything from garage rock, new wave, and post-punk but it's all got this robust sort of personality to it that draws you in and keeps you there so this EP, which spans six songs in length, feels almost like a strange concept record of sorts because it's almost as if the songs interconnect and it's one of those records where you need to listen to all the songs from beginning to end to really grasp the whole thing.
The Figurants EP has such a robust and eclectic Style of songwriting that if you only listen to one or two tracks from this record then you're not getting anywhere near the full spectrum of what the release has to offer as a whole and so, like I said, listening to this full ep is definitely the way to go here.
Throughout its course you get animated and full body vocals along with guitars that at times, give off an almost grunge feel with an enthusiastic and excitable energy, and a lot of synths, keys and pads that add atmosphere and a vastness to a lot of these tracks which brings me back to the whole post-punk in new wave undertones that the record boasts.
The whole aesthetic of this release blends a vintage and old school 80s soundscape with a bit of a more current and edgy feel as well and the combination of old and new really works for this release because they pull it off with a charm.
You can definitely hear all that classic influence embedded in the veins of this release and I think that a lot of that comes through mostly with some of the vocal approaches a little bit of the guitar work, and a lot of the synths that are used sound-wise.
These are the things that make it a bit of a throwback and give me hints of nostalgia when I listen to it but again, that aesthetic is completely nailed, and it blends with a newer feel as well so they're able to pull off a lot here.
What are the things that you really get a lot of is this massive energy that almost gives the air of a live performance where the players involved are just feeding off of each other's energies the entire time and this gives the songs an almost alive and breathing feeling in its own way.
To those because all these guys grew up listening to them and now it's coming through in their music, so I think it's kind of a beautiful thing.
The old inspires the new, the new creates something a little bit different but still holds true to those influences through the music.
32 Ohm is a damn near perfect example of exactly that but again, you do get a lot of these different styles and approaches throughout the record which is what makes it so eclectic and what makes the EP sound so full and lush within just that six song range.
You also have a bit of a thrashing classic rock feel as well, hints of punk rock, there's a lot going on in the record but it all has a glue that makes everything confluent as well and so it is very forward moving, and it has a beautiful flow to it, but it also has that great punch throughout all these songs. And that sticks.
I love how the guitar tones and the attitudes can change from song to song and how listening to this record just makes you want to go see these guys perform it live simply because if this kind of energy and color is captured on record this world must be awesome.
Either way, definitely dive into this EP when you get a chance because it's more than worth your time especially if you love any of the genres mentioned above because these guys really hold all that stuff close to their heart and that comes through with every song on this record.
Check this out and see how it affects you.
