A new single release from Cate Kileva delivers a wondrously lush and vast soundscape that has a way of floating around in the air that surrounds you as it leans on a cinematic backbone and has a unique way of growing an intensity the longer you listen.
"A Melancholy" is a song that feels deeply personal and one of my favorite aspects about this track is its production approach because it has a sort of dark and almost edgy undertone to it that sticks throughout the song making it a haunting in its own way.
There is an honesty that lies beneath the surface and although it does have that sort of dark edginess to it, it also has a bit of a warm and dreamy aspect to it as well that pulls you in.
This is an expansive alternative pop track, and it certainly takes you along for quite the ride as you end up getting engulfed by everything from the vast synth pads to the pianos and so much in between.
This is a song that's got its own atmosphere altogether and does an amazing job of pulling you away from your surroundings and putting you in a different place all together.
There's something incredibly vivid about how the textures blend in with each other and create this impactful sound that you end up wanting more and more of the more you listen.
As the track plays on, that intensity growth starts happening as I mentioned earlier. Along with that, you have percussion and beats that get a little harder and a little edgier.
You soon begin to hear that what you thought were synth pads are blended in with vocals drenched in reverb distanced and this indeed is part of what creates that haunting yet somehow angelic underbelly.
This was graceful and orchestrated in its own way but most of all, it brings this character and personality along with it and I think that is part of what you get attached to the most.
Again, this is personal, and it means something to Cate which makes the song very authentic.
There's something kind of old school about it too that I enjoy. I can't really put my finger on it, but I grew up in the 80s and 90s and there's something that's slightly nostalgic about the approach.
Perhaps it's that edgy sort of gothic feel that comes along with this.
I love a song that creates the feeling of something surreal and even though you're hearing what's being sung and soaking everything in musically, you still take the song until your own life, and it will end up meaning something a little bit different to everybody.
Having said that, it's so incredibly connective and relatable because there is such a genuine and emotional drive and cry out behind it that comes through clear as day.
I definitely loved the way the song wrapped itself around me and kept me right where it wanted to the entire time.
The vocals were gorgeous and sort of silky which was a perfect layer to the textures of the song that already exist.
The whole thing was just beautifully done and quite a wonderful escape.
It was theatrical, charismatic, lush, dream-esque, and genuine.
I'm not sure I could ask for much more.
You should take a listen to this track for yourself and see how it affects you.
