A recent release from Nordly puts together natural instrumentation with '90s pop tones to really build something that feels familiar but also pulls you into its dreamlike vibe at the same time.
The track certainly is not without its top sensibilities, as it does feel like something that would be on the radio, anywhere from the 90s up until now.
You can hear some of those acoustic rock Inspirations shining through, and there's a lot of rich flavor presented, and this is due to the acoustic guitars and chill, laid-back rhythm it delivers.
"Afterwaves" has a wonderfully woven ambience that lets everything feel drifting, and it's an aspect that pulls you along for the ride.
The tone of their voices throughout this song is silky. Almost like a whisper, but with a refined and almost effortless feel to the performance.
The trick to this song is that both male and female parts of the duo are singing.
Sometimes they perform little harmonies, but a lot of the time they're singing the same melodies together, almost like a duet.Â
There are also additional guitars that overlay the acoustics and build out such a great sound, along with a guitar performed with a slide, which is probably the most effective aspect in terms of giving the song that rich, commodious sensation.
The slide guitar adds a certain stylishness to the song and certainly helps deliver the expansive approach they're going for here.
I grew up listening to a lot of this kind of stuff, and for some reason, the song makes me think of artists like Mazzy Star.
The track showcases character, and the instrumentation, along with those performances, help create the mood for the lyrics.
There is loads of vastness in the underbelly of this track, and it really helps give a bit of cinematic effect, as you can easily hear this song in the scene of a film.
Bordering on an indie-pop sound, "Afterwaves" gives you something catchy and memorable while remaining personal.
This is important because songs like this have a purpose in terms of delivering a message.
You can absolutely hear that this is coming from an authentic place, and it seems to talk a lot about emotional childhood after effects, whether they be good or bad, and how those experiences and environments play a part in shaping who we become when we grow up.
All of it is put in a very unique approach lyrically, and if you listen to the song carefully, you can pick up on all of it.
This is a tall-standing single and the latest in a set of releases from the Danish and Swedish duo after dropping several singles and an EP.
They are always taking on different shapes and setting new milestones in how they evolve, creating songs with fewer boundaries around them each time.
Still, they managed to put together singles like this that express a lot of persona and genuine truth, while once again, still remaining catchy and not without its pop overtones whatsoever.
This is a song that feels pretty intimate, and I don't suggest that you miss it.
You should also dig into some of the duo's other releases when you can, because if you like this song, you're going to like a lot more of their music.
It's quite fun to listen to their evolution in songwriting since 2019, when they began.
Take a listen to this song now and see what it does for you.
