With the release of the M.E.S.I. album, Summi takes the best parts of hip hop and indie-pop and mends them together bringing on a sound familiar, but fresh at the same time. Laced with addictive progressions, a youthful energy, and plenty of pop undertones, the record boasts the aesthetic of underground anthems.
The first single, “One Shot" grabs you with its infectious taste and endlessly fun style along with its breathing arrangement.
"Being the single on the album, “One Shot” definitely has a pop to it. Right from the get go, you’re drawn in by the piano melody, met by dreamy, ambient vocals. This song may be 'chill' in character, but boy does it knock. The chorus of the song has a very catchy hook that sets up camp right in your ears, with no intention of leaving. It’s qualities of indie pop and hip-hop help it to blend nicely with the rest of the album, all the while bringing something new to the table. " explains the artist of his single.
Although "One Shot" speaks volumes for the album, to get a real understanding of where Summi is coming from, the full album should be heard in its entirety.
"M.E.S.I. (the album title), stands for, Mellow Echo, Steady Increase. This project was all about the constant struggle to want to be better, all the while learning to accept my place in the world. Learning to love myself and say, Hey. It's okay to be where you’re at. I’ve always been one to want the next best thing. To be in someone else’s shoes. To be further along in my career than time would even allow, without even giving myself credit for what I had already accomplished. I believe that it’s important to strive for more and to keep a steady increase at anything you do… that is, if you want to get better at it. But that doesn’t mean that what you’re currently doing, or where you’re currently at doesn’t have significance to your life as a whole and the people you’re surrounded by. Every little movement you make has an impact. Every word you speak has a mellow echo. So sure, never stop trying to out-do yourself, but please. Don’t forget to acknowledge the importance of where you currently stand. " says Summi of the albums underlying message.
Summi is the brainchild of songwriter and artist Hunter Sumner who started off riffing on a piano at the age of only 5 years old. From there his love for music only grew and in high school, he began to learn about recording instruments and vocals.
At first Sumner produced and wrote EDM music and it eventually evolved into laying down hip hop beats.
Falling deeper in love with his craft, Sumner kept on producing material until he got to a place comfortable enough to take a next step. He needed someone to rap on his songs.
As the artist himself puts it, "Man, I need a rapper to spit on all these beats I got….. Wait. Why don't I just do it?"
So, he dove into the study of hip hop and many other genres until he decided it was time to write and track his own raps.
It was really then that Summi was born and the M.E.S.I. album is serves as a testament to where he is at with his own sound right now.
The M.E.S.I. album is available on all major outlets for streaming and the artist is always working on new material and collaborations for the near future.
