An EP release from Orquestra 24 Cuadros brings together several character-driven elements to a beautifully lush and almost fantastical musical atmosphere that you quickly get wrapped up in.
The Whale Waltzes EP comes through with such immense theatrical tonality that it's easy to just Escape into this record and forget about the reality that surrounding you and I for one love that factor.
I feel like this record is more an experience than an EP because it feels like you just watched a movie if you listen to the whole thing through.
Or it's like reading a book where you just forget about everything except what's going on in that book because you're engulfed in it.
This record provides the same level of escapism and it's wonderful because the whole thing is put together with such attention to detail, but it never loses that character or persona that it began with in the first place.
As a matter of fact, that character only intensifies the deeper you go into this record.
Not only do you get this dark and edgy character at times that makes you think of someone like Tom Waits or Nick Cave for example, but you get all of this crazy instrumentation from horns to keys, upright bass, cello, guitar, and so much more creating this entire atmosphere that you just don't want to leave once you're in.
There's so much going on musically that it's fully orchestrated and just creates a whole soundscape for you to swim through no matter what the song.
Not only that but these guys are not afraid to just jam out on sections and let loose and that attribute builds on the energy factor for the whole record because throughout this EP it does feel like the players are feeding off of each other the entire time giving the songs the vibe of being alive and breathing.
This is part of what makes it so special and what gives it all that mass character.
There are times when this release feels like you're watching a play, and you fall right into that and are able to thoroughly enjoy it.
I love the attitudes and the drive behind this record, and it obviously takes a group of people that have a pure love for their craft, and I don't just mean their instruments, I mean song writing and building something together so that it becomes a massive piece of music that moves you.
These songs are indeed alive and it's just something that you don't hear often so when you do it's a little bit awe-inspiring.
Most of the elements of these songs are so vividly portrayed and the delivery of everything is right on point and feels natural like they've been doing this their entire lives which, they just may have been.
The vocal approach on the ads to that presence in that character even more and goes right along with the musical stylings as they swell and sway throughout their course.
A lot about this is gracefully done and has so much full-bodied and \bountiful undertones that when the record's over you have to sort of snap yourself back to reality again.
I love a record that pulls you out of where you are and puts you in a different place together and this is a prime example of exactly that.
I'm giving this an 8 out of 10 hands down and if you're someone who enjoys music that has layers that can be peeled back and that you need to listen to a few times to really soak everything in, this is for you.
